Prayer in Many Forms (Certificate in Spiritual Formation)
Starting: 3/11/2010
Ending: 3/14/2010
Instructor: Greta Reed
What is prayer? Most people who write and think about prayer would say that at the least it involves coming into relationship with the Divine. For many of us, that has been a matter of our doing most of the talking, with the expectation that God’s doing the listening, and hopefully responding.
In “Prayer in Many Forms,” a course that will be as much workshop as retreat, we will honor these spoken prayers—“primary speech” as some have called it—especially in the form of the Psalms. But we will also enter into reflective praying with them, allowing the Psalmist’s words to speak to us.
Looking beyond our word-filled prayers to other forms in the Christian tradition, we will study and enter into a prayer of self-emptying, as we simply wait and trust; another will be a form of attentiveness; and yet another, a simple consent to the love of God/Jesus/Holy Spirit. There is more.
Those who take this course will have the opportunity to learn about and immerse themselves in several forms of prayer, many of which though neglected for centuries are now being rediscovered.

The Spiritualities of Creation: Knowing God and Self in a Broken World (Certificate in Spiritual Formation)
Starting: 4/15/2010
Ending: 4/18/2010
This course will be held at the Montreat Conference Center. This very timely and relevant course will look at the various ways the Old Testament deals with creation, particularly in light of our broken world, a world that cries out for restoration and renewal. Texts ranging from Genesis 1 to Proverbs 8 and Psalm 104 will be explored theologically, ecologically, and experientially. Participants will have opportunity to develop their own spirituality of creation in conversation with these texts and with each other Class Instructor, Dr. William P. Brown has taught Old Testament literature and theology at Columbia Theological Seminary for five years. Before that, he taught at Union Presbyterian Seminary (formerly Union-PSCE) in Richmond, VA, for thirteen years. Bill has published widely on issues of creation theology, the Psalms, and the Wisdom Literature of the Old Testament. He is a founding member of Earth Covenant Ministry, an organization of several Presbyterian congregations in the Atlanta area whose mission is to provide theological and practical resources for churches to help them care for creation. His forthcoming book, The Seven Pillars of Creation: The Bible, Science, and the Ecology of Wonder, is due out next year. There is a reading assignment for this course. Discerning Forgiveness (Certificate in Spiritual Formation)
Starting: 4/22/2010
Ending: 4/25/2010
The Christian faith is indelibly and distinctively marked by the imperative both to receive and to offer forgiveness. But Christian voices on the subject differ widely. Some urge forgiveness as a Christian duty under all circumstances, while others argue that certain prior conditions must be met for forgiveness to be meaningful or effective. Some believe forgiveness is the surest route to healing for the offended, while others hold that therapeutic value cannot be the essence of Christian forgiveness. How do we sort through the competing claims and varied interpretations? What is the core nature and role of this powerful divine gift we are called to participate in? Our class will help us attend to several voices in this debate, discern some of the complexities of timing and circumstance, claim a stance with scriptural and theological integrity, and engage in key practices to help us learn the "craft" of forgiveness.

Youth Ministry Leadership Initiative: Soul Tending: Finding Spirituality in Your Ministry
Starting: 4/30/2010
Ending: 5/1/2010
Have you ever flinched and mused about the people you work with, wondering “If they do that again, I might throttle them!”? Have you ever hustled and hurried around the town you strive in, forgetting that “If I were to stop and breathe, I might remember I have a life.”? A big difference exists between being in a funk and getting “funky!” A big difference looms between capturing God’s Spirit and being fed by the Spirit. The psalmists cried, lamented, sang and praised. Jesus went away to pray. The disciples cast out demons, anointed with oil, cured and shook off dust. We will come together and get a little funky with spiritual formation … using sticks and stones, water and rope, paper and pencil, and the Bible – we will work on disciplines and practices for tending the whole of your ministry, remembering who you are and paying attention to how God is forming your inward and outward journey! This event is offered in conjunction with the Youth Ministry Certificate. Participants are encouraged to read and bring with them Soul Shaper by Tony Jones and Spiritual Disciplines Handbook: Practices that Transform Us by Adele Ahlberg Calhoun

Women's Contemplative Retreat: The Rule of St. Benedict: Ancient Wisdom for our (Troubled) Times
Starting: 5/17/2010
Ending: 5/20/2010
In this retreat, participants will be given a blend of prayer and study, work and rest, solitude and community--a rhythm patterned after the object of our study, the Rule of St Benedict. Written 1500 years ago by a layman as a guide for his fellow monks, the Rule has continued to enlighten and challenge faithful Christians for centuries. Its wisdoms--so clear, direct and practical--have much to offer anyone who is truly seeking God in the midst of a complex, confusing often hyper-busy life.
Benedict addresses a wide range of issues facing those who struggle to surrender themselves to God's call: the primacy of Scripture as the living word of God ("Holy Scripture cries aloud!"); Christ as the beginning, the endpoint, and the way; the importance of community; the role of the leader not as infallible authority but as loving father guiding his flock with a firm but gentle hand.
He speaks about the lure of attachments, the high price of freedom, the challenge of the Gospel call; the endless need for God's grace and mercy.
We are fortunate to be able to hold this course at the beautiful Benedictine Spirituality Center on the grounds of Sacred Heart monastery in Cullman Alabama. Participants will be invited to join the sisters for prayer; sisters will be available to speak with us about different aspects of their life as Benedictines. You may even be invited to experiment with creating a simple "rule of life" for yourself, one that fits the circumstances of your own life.
Instructor, Lalor Cadley is a writer, educator, retreat leader and spiritual director who for the past 20 years has companioned people on the spiritual journey. An Associate of Green Bough House of Prayer in Adrian GA, Lalor has spent many hours in the company of those who observe the Rule, has made a promise to keep trying to observe it in her own life, and welcomes this opportunity to share Benedict's profound wisdoms with others on the journey.

Evangelism for the Rest of Us (Thompson Scholars - Evangelism and Ministry)
Starting: 5/25/2010
Ending: 5/28/2010
For many people these days even the word “evangelism” makes us very uneasy. Mainline churches often think of evangelism only as membership management. But the communication of God’s good news is one of the primary callings of the Church. What does a biblical theology of evangelism look like? How might faithful and effective evangelism be practiced today? How might those in our churches become more confident in their personal witness to Christ? Participants in the Thompson Scholar program will discuss the major contemporary issues in evangelism as these pertain to the local congregation, including the nature of the Gospel, the dynamics of conversion, the biblical theology of witness and the congregational practice of missio Dei.
The Thompson Scholars program features small-group discussions, family-style meals, evening sessions and visits to other ministry settings. The schedule includes evening sessions. Participation is limited to 15 individuals, who are selected after submitting an application; all participants are expected to attend all sessions. Dr. Steve Hayner, President of Columbia and Professor of Evangelism and Church Growth, and the Rev. Sharol Hayner will lead the event. Both Steve and Sharol have a passion to see churches help their congregants in integrate their faith and witness more thoroughly in their day to day lives.
To apply, submit an email to Sarah Erickson (ericksons@ctsnet.edu) that includes the following information:
- name of applicant, church name/denomination, preferred mailing address, phone number and email address,
- a brief answer to two questions: 1) How would you describe the challenges of evangelism in your particular context and in general in our 21st century context? 2) Why would you like to participate in this event?
- Applications will be reviewed as they are received and accepted until the event is full or until April 1.
The program fee is $165 includes housing for three nights, double occupancy, at the Harrington Center on the seminary campus; all meals are included. Due to a limited number of rooms available on campus, requests for single housing will be on a wait list only; the program fee for single housing, if available, will be $315.00. The reduced program fee for this event has been made possible through the financial support of gifts in honor of Dr. Cecil Thompson dedicated to the support of the work of evangelism in the church.

Learning Christ: Spiritual Practices in the New Testament (Certificate in Spiritual Formation)
Starting: 7/18/2010
Ending: 7/23/2010
This course explores the spiritual disciplines and practices of the first Christians, including the theological, Christological, and eschatological convictions in which they were grounded. How did the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ shape Christian spirituality? Why was the oneness of God so important? What gave rise to the New Testament writers' sense that they were living in the "last days" and how did this notion of time shape their practices. Specific topics to be covered include hospitality, forgiveness, prayer, sharing of property, love, self-renunciation, reconciliation, bearing one another's burdens, and watchfulness.

Youth Ministry Leadership Because the Bible Tells Me So: Putting the Bible Back in Bible Study.
Starting: 8/27/2010
Ending: 8/28/2010
One of the courses in Youth Leadership Ministry Initiative certificate program; occasional students welcome. This course will focus on the God’s story as it unfolds in the Bible and in our lives, themes in the Old Testament, and Synoptic Gospels in the New Testament, and ways to weave Bible study and pop culture together in ways that work for your youth. Emphasis will be given to how to use the Bible as a teaching tool in creative, engaging ways. There will be pre-course reading for this course.
Instructors: Anna Brown and Victor Cyrus-Franklin. Brown is a Certified Christian Educator and an elder in the Presbyterian Church (USA) currently serving as the Director of Christian Education at Pleasant Hill Presbyterian Church in Duluth, GA. Anna is an educational generalist whose work has included youth ministry in the local church for 27 years. (That’s a lot of pizza!) To Anna, knowing our Story, our Biblical story, is a critical piece of youth ministry, as it not only serves as part of our content, but informs every aspect of how we do our ministry. Therefore she is excited about the opportunity to help “get our Story straight” in creative ways with the YMLI participants. Cyrus-Franklin currently serves as the Minister of Youth at East Point First Mallalieu United Methodist Church in East Point, GA. He received his bachelor’s degree from Tennessee State University with a major in English and a minor in Philosophy and Religious Studies. Victor went on to earn the Master of Divinity degree from the Interdenominational Theological Center (ITC) with a concentration in theology. Through teaching, preaching, living, and learning, Victor has a passion for ministry that fosters intergenerational dialogue, communication, and growth. In his ministry, he strives to discern how God speaks to us through a variety of mediums: from the Bible to popular music to comic strips and film.

Liturgy of the Hours - An Old Practice for the New Church (Certificate in Spiritual Formation)
Starting: 10/21/2010
Ending: 10/24/2010
Location: Montreat Conference Center
In a time when Christians and the church are yearning to renew their spiritual vitality, and deepen their faith, Paul Lang recovers for the church the ancient but timeless liturgy of the hours. The Liturgy of the Hours is a long-practiced discipline of the faith which countless saints have used to gently, patiently, and persistently reshape their lives before God. This ancient Christian discipline is experiencing a revival of practice among Christians throughout the world. This course will couple instruction about the Liturgy of the Hours with the daily immersion of praying the offices of Vigils, Lauds, Terce, Sext, None, Vespers, and Compline. You will learn about the biblical roots and historical development of the Liturgy of the Hours, how to sing the psalms, about the theological themes and emphases associated with each office, and be given many ideas about how to take this practice home with you for personal use as well as how to introduce it in your own church.

Starting: 12/3/2010
Ending: 12/4/2010
Course description: Offered in conjunction with the Youth Ministry Leadership Initiative certificate program; all students welcome. We will begin by talking about theology using the lens of Chapter 2 of the Book of Order, looking at affirmations that Presbyterians share with other Christians, affirmations that are distinctive to Reformed Christians, and making reference to the Confessions in connection with these themes. We will explore a couple of case studies on sacramental questions, which we hope will be informed by the Book of Order, the confessions, and elements of the sacramental study report "Invitation to Christ." Participants are asked to have and read ahead of time 1)) the Constitution (both books), and especially a) Nicene Creed, Apostles' Creed, Brief Statement of Faith, and one of the 16th/17th century confessions in its entirety (from the Book of Confession, Study Edition preferred). b) the first four chapters of the Form of Government and first three chapters of the Director for Worship in the Book of Order. 2) "Invitation to Christ", the report of the sacramental study group, received by GA last year. This is online at the PCUSA Office of Theology and Worship website www.pcusa.org/theologyandworship/worship/sacramentworkgroup.htm; and 3) The Presbyterian Handbook. Bring Bibles. Certificate in Spiritual Formation: Pilgrimage to the Holy Land
Starting: 3/7/2011
Ending: 3/23/2011
Pilgrimage is one of the oldest and most important spiritual disciplines. The capstone of the Certificate Program in Spiritual Formation is a pilgrimage to the Holy land. Columbia Seminary will sponsor this journey from March 9-23, 2011. However the journey really begins on March 7 with Orientation in Atlanta. Everyone who signs up will be required to attend all sessions of orientation. We will leave as a group from Atlanta on March 9, 2011.
This once in a lifetime journey consists of 7 days in Galilee and 7 days in Jerusalem. The pilgrimage is designed for spiritual formation and renewal. We will make excursions from the hotels in the mornings, leaving the afternoons free for small groups, rest, journaling and worship. Academy Travel in Decatur will handle all your travel arrangements. There will be readings and orientation before the journey and reflection papers when we return. Remember, if you are doing this pilgrimage in order to graduate, you must complete all other certificate work 3 months prior to the departure date, December 7, 2010.
The cost of the Pilgrimage: $630 tuition plus your air travel from Atlanta to Tel Aviv. The cost of orientation, hotels, transfers, meals, guides and ground transportation for this particular pilgrimage is supported through a generous grant made to Columbia Seminary. Participants in the program who need this pilgrimage to graduate will receive priority when registering. You will receive a personal email from Deedra Rich, the Program Coordinator, when you have been officially confirmed to go on the pilgrimage.
TO REGISTER: Submit an application form and $50 to the Center for Lifelong Learning Registrar, Angela Wyatt. When you are accepted for the trip, we will notify you and the remainder of the tuition ($580) will be due immediately. We will post additional information on the CTS website as it becomes finalized.

Youth Ministry Leadership Initiative: The Big Three: Worship, Mission, and Fellowship
Starting: 5/6/2011
Ending: 5/7/2011
Offered in conjunction with the Youth Ministry Leadership certificate program; other participants welcome! How is youth ministry a way of life (besides the late night phone calls and explaining to your adult friends why you’re at a high school football game again on Friday night)? How are we participating in God’s mission? Where youth ministry and church meet up can often be fuzzy: Too often we mistake youth worship for a “program,” youth fellowship nights as recruitment opportunities, or youth mission trips as “annual” events. What if we learned how to discuss these theologically as we worked toward integrating them in ministry and in life? Join us for theological discussions, some embodied exercises, and imaginative dreaming about how to faithfully raise reformers (not reform-ed). Plus, we’ll share ways to for you to discuss your theological explorations “back home” with your supervising pastor. This course is based on the first and last chapters of the Directory for Worship in the PC(U.S.A.)’s Book of Order and will include readings and lessons from missional theology and the emerging church conversation. A preliminary reading assignment and participation in an invitation-only Facebook discussion group moderated by this year’s leader, Troy Bronsink, are part of the pre-course work.
