Teaching Spiritual Formation in the Congregation (Certificate in Spiritual Formation)
Starting: 8/9/2009
Ending: 8/14/2009
Instructor: Jane Vennard
Interest in spiritual formation is usually related to our individual lives. We search for ways to grow closer to God through a variety of spiritual practices and may seek out others committed to the spiritual journey. But we often are unable to take the next step which is to create a community dedicated to spiritual formation. This course will explore many practical ways for building such a community by teaching spiritual formation in our congregations. We will begin by discussing what we mean by spiritual formation and envision what it might look like in a congregation. Then we will experience practices that guide our own spiritual formation, and find ways to share these disciplines with others. We will look closely and compassionately at our own churches to discern their needs for spiritual growth. Finally, we will discuss specific methods for introducing spiritual formation and eliciting commitments from our congregations
The course will be experiential including prayer, small groups, individual reflection, and silence as well as presentations and discussion. You will begin your own teaching plan and have the opportunity to share your ideas with other participants so as to learn from one another.

Mysticism and Christian Spirituality (Certificate in Spiritual Formation)
Starting: 10/22/2009
Ending: 10/25/2009
This course will be held at Montreat Conference Center.
This course will explore both historical and experiential aspects of Christian mysticism. Using Old and New Testament writings, books about Eastern and Western Christian mysticism by contemporary writers and original writings of Christian mystics, mystical experience will be examined from a variety of perspectives.
At the center of many spiritual traditions, mysticism has been perhaps the most elusive aspect of spirituality for academic study. And yet it has been present in so many of those we know in other contexts. To what extent were Old Testament prophets such as Moses, Elijah and Isaiah mystics? What about Paul and John the Evangelist in the New Testament? Can we learn anything from Christian mystics like Origin, Pseudo-Dionysius, Gregory of Nyssa, Meister Eckhart and others about the mystical aspects of our own Christian faith and experience?

Interfaith Immersion (Certificate in Spiritual Formation)
Starting: 11/15/2009
Ending: 11/20/2009
The 21st Century will be a Religious Century. Christianity and Islam will be the major forces at work, yet the other faiths will always be present in the conversation. Most of us are ill-prepared to have conversations with those who are not from the Christian Tradition and the course on Interfaith Spirituality seeks to assist in this problem. This course aims to expose participants to the Five Faiths that dominate the scene. First, each participant will have an opportunity to read the works of leaders like Karen Armstrong, Bruce Feiler and Huston Smith. Each day the class will visit a Mosque, Synagogue, Temple, Church or Buddhist Center. The visit will include a tour of the place of worship, a lecture by a scholar of that faith, a meal together, and face-to-face conversations with practitioners of the faith. Following this day of rich interaction, the class will gather for reflection. We will look at the differences in the various faiths, our own faith, our experience of others, and the dreams and hopes that are beginning to take shape within us. In our opinion, nothing is more timely for those of us who are following the spiritual path. From this course we will learn tolerance and acceptance of others, a deeper appreciation for our own tradition, skills to work with those who are no longer far away but live next door to us. Joining in this movement of Interfaith Spirituality will help you shape a way of life for your children and grandchildren. Ben Johnson, founder of the Spirituality program, has spent the last few years in interfaith dialogue in Atlanta. He has taught and led numerous seminars on this topic, one that is very close to his heart. This will be a special event. Instructor: Ben Johnson Program Fee $350

Youth Ministry Leadership Initiative The Big Three Worship Mission and Fellowship
Starting: 12/4/2009
Ending: 12/5/2009
How is youth ministry a way of life (besides the late night phone calls and explaining to your adult friends why you’re at a high school football game again on Friday night)? How are we participating in God’s mission? Where youth ministry and church meet up can often be fuzzy: Too often we mistake youth worship for a “program,” youth fellowship nights as recruitment opportunities, or youth mission trips as “annual” events. These calendar items compete with each other and sometimes compete with “Big Church” items. Maybe we do that because we compartmentalize these three Biggies. Maybe we do this because we place youth ministry in a compartment all to itself. What if we learned how to discuss these theologically as we worked toward integrating them in ministry and in life? Come be a part of this creative learning adventure. Join us for theological discussions, some embodied exercises, and imaginative dreaming about how to faithfully raise reformers. Leader: TBA. Facilitators Neema Cyrus Franklin and Sarah Erickson. Program Fee: $150 includes two meals. Housing available on campus - please register separately.

Youth Ministry Leadership Initiative: Soul Tending: Finding Spirituality in Your Ministry
Starting: 4/30/2010
Ending: 5/1/2010
Have you ever flinched and mused about the people you work with, wondering “If they do that again, I might throttle them!”? Have you ever hustled and hurried around the town you strive in, forgetting that “If I were to stop and breathe, I might remember I have a life.”? A big difference exists between being in a funk and getting “funky!” A big difference looms between capturing God’s Spirit and being fed by the Spirit. The psalmists cried, lamented, sang and praised. Jesus went away to pray. The disciples cast out demons, anointed with oil, cured and shook off dust. We will come together and get a little funky with spiritual formation … using sticks and stones, water and rope, paper and pencil, and the Bible – we will work on disciplines and practices for tending the whole of your ministry, remembering who you are and paying attention to how God is forming your inward and outward journey! This event is offered in conjunction with the Youth Ministry Certificate. Participants are encouraged to read and bring with them Soul Shaper by Tony Jones and Spiritual Disciplines Handbook: Practices that Transform Us by Adele Ahlberg Calhoun

Theology and Polity: How Presbyterians Talk About God (Youth Ministry Leadership Initiative)
Starting: 12/3/2010
Ending: 12/4/2010
We will begin by talking about theology using the lens of Chapter 2 of the Book of Order (BOO/Form of Government/FOG), looking at affirmations that Presbyterians share with other Christians, affirmations that are distinctive to Reformed Christians, and making reference to the Confessions in connection with these themes. We will explore a couple of case studies on sacramental questions, which we hope will be informed by the BOO, the confessions, and elements of the sacramental study report "Invitation to Christ." Offered in conjunction with the Youth Ministry Leadership Initiative certificate program.
Resources to have and to read ahead of time: 1) the Constitution (both books), and especially a) Nicene Creed, Apostles' Creed, Brief Statement of Faith, and one of the 16th/17th century confessions in its entirety (from BOC, Study Edition preferred). b) the first four chapters of FOG and first three chapters of the DW (from BOO). 2) "Invitation to Christ", the report of the sacramental study group, received by GA last year. This is online at the PCUSA Office of Theology and Worship website: http://www.pcusa.org/theologyandworship/worship/sacramentworkgroup.htm Bring Bibles. Suggested library builders (resources to add, borrow, read if you can but not required) Shirley Guthrie's Christian Doctrine and Jack Rogers, Reading the Bible and the Confessions the Presbyterian Way.
