Free “Spanish for Ministry” Conference at Emory:
The breakdown of the themes for each section are as follows: Professor Marie Marquardt will discuss give a short introduction to demographic changes in the region, challenges for immigrants in "new destinations" and some general characteristics of Latinos in Georgia that would be relevant to the question of how best to "welcome in." Dr. Marquardt will also briefly introduce some of the more innovative ways that churches have worked to welcome Latino immigrants. Reverend Nora Martinez is the chair of the Deacons in North Georgia and coordinator of ministry with immigrants, including Hispanic/Latino ministries. She will share with us the plan she has developed for helping churches decide how best to be in ministry with Spanish-Speaking populations. In this session, one speaker will talk about advocacy for immigrant populations and Don Richter, author of Mission Trips that Matter, will talk about missions at home and abroad with Spanish speakers.
Charis Art Exhibit at CTS: “Boundary Crossings: Neighbors, Strangers, Family, Friends” is the theme of Charis art exhibit, hosted by Columbia Theological Seminary’s Center for Lifelong Learning, from February 1-August 7, 2010. Charis (from the Greek for “gift” or “grace”) is an international traveling art exhibit of about 40 works by seven Asian and seven North American artists. The artwork includes paintings, sculptures, assemblage, fiber constructions, installation, and video projections. The intent of the exhibit is to explore boundary-crossing questions. In our visually-oriented world, with its convergence of cultures, what are the implications for Christian faith and artistic practice? How can people of faith address real-world issues of social justice, peace, reconciliation? How do we live with a spirit of grace toward our neighbor, wherever we live?
For additional information about the exhibit, read the article in the Spring 2010 edition of JOURNEYING TOGETHER, Lifelong Learning’s online newsletter.
Upcoming YMLI Events: The Center for Lifelong Learning has one more course in the Youth Ministry Leadership Initiative (YMLI) certificate program scheduled before the end of the school year. As always, we have at least 2 free spaces for CTS students and unlimited half-fee spaces for students. For more info on these and other lifelong learning courses, contact Sarah Erickson, Director, at ericksons@ctsnet.edu or 404.687.4526.

Barbara Brown Taylor to Preach on ‘Day 1:’ The Rev. Barbara Brown Taylor, priest, educator, and best-selling author, is the featured preacher March 21 on “Day 1,” the nationally broadcast radio program also accessible by podcast at Day1.org. Each of the two programs—airing on the first and last Sundays of Lent—includes a message by Taylor along with interviews conducted by the program’s host and executive producer, Peter Wallace.
For the fifth Sunday of Lent, Taylor’s sermon “The Prophet Mary,” focuses on the life of Mary, sister of Martha and Lazarus, who offers Jesus a lavish display of devotion (John 12:1-8). “Whatever Mary thought about what she did, and whatever anyone else in the room thought about it, Jesus took it as a message from God—not the hysteric ministrations of an old maid gone sweetly mad, but the carefully performed act of a prophet…. She was anointing Jesus for his burial.
For more information, call toll free 888-411-Day-1 or check the program’s Web site, http://day1.org.
Formerly known as “The Protestant Hour,” “Day 1” celebrates 65 years of weekly broadcast in 2010. Distributed to 200 radio stations across America and overseas, it is produced by the Alliance for Christian Media in association with the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, the Episcopal Church, the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.), the United Church of Christ and the United Methodist Church. The program has received numerous awards, including the George Foster Peabody Award and the Communicators’ Award for Excellence in inspirational radio.

CTS Recycling Program Services: As you may remember, Emory has stopped picking up recycling on our campus. With many thanks to our maintenance team for their invaluable assistance, here is our new campus recycling program.
Columbia Seminary contracts with the City of Decatur Recycling Services for regular pickup from two recycling dumpsters. The dumpster for the upper campus buildings is located by the tennis courts. The dumpster for the lower campus buildings is located by Village Residents 39-42.
Additionally, there are four large recycling cans on wheels located in the new brick refuse area between the parking areas of the Harrington Center, Florida Hall, and the new residential building. These canisters will be taken to the dumpsters once a week by our maintenance crew.
These recycling services are for single stream collection. This means there is no need to sort; there is only one dumpster for paper, aluminum, glass and plastic. Below is a list of acceptable items for recycling and a reminder for what is not acceptable.
Remember to recycle: --Metal coffee cans --Tin cans (vegetable, soup, beans, cat food, etc.) --Glass bottles – any color --Newspapers --Magazines --Junk mail and catalogs --White milk jugs --Clear and green plastic soda and water bottles --Chipboard (cereal boxes, six pack containers, shoe boxes, etc.) --All Plastics labeled with a recycling logo and any Number 1 through 7 --All HDPE or No. 1 plastic containers, including black planting trays and black plastic flower pots, bleach bottles, yellow plastic milk cartons, etc.
