The Art of Worship

The program fee of $25 covers the entire afternoon and evening, participating in two small group workshops, a dinner, and a shared worship gathering. Pastors, worship directors, artists and lay people are encouraged to attend together. Registration limited to 100, so be sure to register soon. Registration closes December 22, 2008. Crafting Continuing Education: Identity and Intentionality (SACEM Annual Meeting and New Director Workshop)

Starting: 3/6/2009
Ending: 3/8/2009
SACEM’s annual conference will challenge participants to consider what it means to craft continuing education for ministry programs that honor tradition and embark on new directions. We will, individually and together, discern what is core to our identity to insure that the past is present in the future, and we will be intentional in considering new directions.

The design of the conference will also have this both/and focus. The focus of the Annual SACEM conference is strengthening the practice of continuing education for ministry in times of change. The 2009 conference will strive to continue the traditions and opportunities enjoyed during past conferences - the banquet on Friday night, time to build or renew relationships, networking and resource sharing, meaningful worship, and presentations and workshop opportunities.
The pedagogy for this year’s conference will be highly collaborative and will include the use of learning approaches such as Harrison Owen’s “Open Space Learning ” and Parker Palmer’s “Circles of Trust.” Our goal is to explore ways that we can build an effective learning community focused on continuing education for ministry.

Leadership for the conference will include Russ Moxley, Ron Cervero, and Kim Long. Additional conference information, including schedule and registration, may be found by following the link in “register here,” below.
Fees: registration fees do not include SACEM dues. Registration deadline March 4, 2009.

Starting: 3/15/2009
Ending: 3/20/2009
Starting: 3/15/2009
Ending: 3/20/2009
Leader: Walter Brueggemann
This study will consider the Book of Isaiah as a guiding script for an urban economy that has failed and that might be restored. While appropriate attention will be given to historical questions and "original" contexts of the book, focus will be on the contemporeneity of the text. Our guiding question will be: How do we live faithfully and constructively in a society of deep loss and thin hope? The Book of Isaiah pushes always toward new possibility, perhaps an urgent dimension of church faith just now.

Growing in Discernment: Attuning our Spiritual Senses (Certificate in Spiritual Formation)

Starting: 4/16/2009
Ending: 4/19/2009
Interest in discernment has been growing significantly for more than a decade. Individuals seek personal discernment for vocational decisions and life-changing turns. Church leaders seek guidance concerning their congregations' distinctive purpose and mission in the world. Whole denominations search for God's will in matters of doctrine, ethics, and faithful living. An ancient spiritual practice, discernment is once again being recognized and embraced as a timely and practical means of grace.
To discern is to sort and sift through the possibilities when we face a variety of choices. The kinds of questions that might lead us into spiritual discernment tend to be simple: What is the faithful path to take in this circumstance? How do we find clarity on God's will in this matter? Yet the answers to these questions rarely seem straightforward when we are puzzled by opposing voices, or multiple options seem attractive. Learning to become more discerning is largely a matter of attuning our spiritual eyes and ears to signs of divine guidance in ordinary life.
This class will explore the nature of spiritual discernment, and a number of practical patterns that can help open our spiritual senses to the gift of growing clarity, both individually and in small groups. Instructor: Marjorie Thompson. Fee: $378 This course will be held at Montreat Conference Center
