Advanced Theology Program Information
Master of Theology (ThM)
Director of the ThM degree program:
Dr. Martha L. Moore-Keish
Associate Professor of Theology, Director of ThM
Office: Campbell Hall 313
The Master of Theology (ThM) is designed for persons already holding an M.Div degree or its equivalent and who wish to deepen their mastery in one area or discipline of theological study through reflection, research, and writing for the service of the Church.
The distinctive element of Columbia’s ThM program is the opportunity to work closely with faculty mentors in research of mutual interest. Students pursue a one-year course of full-time study that includes coursework in relevant curricular areas; a seminar in research methods; close work with a faculty mentor; the production of a publishable research thesis project; and, by application to the faculty, the opportunity to serve as a research or teaching assistant.
Doctor of Theology in Pastoral Care and Ministry (ThD)
Director of the ThD program:
Dr. John William Harkins, III
Senior Lecturer of Pastoral Theology and Care
Office: Campbell Hall 308
Columbia Theological Seminary's Doctor of Theology (ThD) in pastoral counseling degree is an accredited four-year graduate program. It is designed for ministers who wish to become pastoral counselors, serve as consultants to other clergy, or train others in pastoral care. Upon completion students qualify for specialized ministry at a doctoral level, including teaching, and membership in the American Association of Pastoral Counseling. They may also become licensed counselors by the state. The ThD program requires students to design and execute a major research project and complete a doctoral dissertation on their findings. Applications to the ThD program are currently not being accepted (for the fall 2016 academic year) while the program is under formal review.
