Earth Community & End of the World Spirituality~Certificate in Spiritual Formation

Held at CTS. Part of the Certificate in Spiritual Formation program.This course examines the “end of the world” and “new creation” spiritualities of the earliest Christians, particularly as they pose problems and possibilities for engaging the earth as an integral element in Christian spirituality. We will also explore theological dimensions of the ecological issues facing this generation of the church. The Instructor Stan Saunders is Associate Professor of New Testament at Columbia Theological Seminary.
There is a reading assignment for this course. Please contact the Spirituality Program Office (lewist@ctsnet.edu) if you have not received the assignment by April 13, 2008. CEU credit is available for this course. Inquire upon arrival.

POSTPONED Character Ethics in the Gospel of Mark (Summer Bible Seminar)

With Steven Kraftchick, New Testament scholar and Director of Advanced Studies at Emory University’s Candler School of Theology, explore how Mark develops the characters of God, Jesus, his disciples, his opponents, and the crowds. What does this portrait of different characters tell us about virtues and vice? What does it convey about the character of a follower of Christ? In this seminar we will look at how Mark’s narrative constructs the community of believers by showing what a follower’s character should be. Class begins Monday evening July 21 and concludes Thursday July 24 at lunchtime. Program fee is $140 (lodging and meals extra).(LM)

Shape Note: Still Alive and Singing (Montreat Summer Series 2008)

Come for what promises to be an unforgettable learning and singing experience, in a free-admission evening called, “Shape-Note: America’s Earliest Music – Still Alive & Singing,” Wednesday, July 23, at 7:00 pm in the Convocation Hall of Assembly Inn at the Montreat Conference Center, Montreat, NC.
Shape notes are a music notation designed to facilitate a cappella congregational singing, especially for, but not limited to the musically untrained.
In this session, Jane Spencer – an avid and experienced shape-note singing participant and teacher – will introduce you to the four-shape and seven-shape systems of shape-note singing. With the help of several experienced singers, she will incorporate you into the "hollow square," for an authentic shape-note experience.
No pre-registration is required. A reception sponsored by the Montreat Summer Club will follow.
Besides Columbia Seminary and Montreat Conference Center, sponsors include the Montreat Adult Summer Club and the Presbyterian Heritage Center at Montreat.

Leadership Development (Lay Leader Training/Spanish)

This course focuses on helping to recover the essence of a true potential for leadership and to improve the mental attitude of a leader, in order to develop an effective leadership within the church. NOTE: To enroll in this course, you must first be a paid registrant in the overall program ("Initial Enrollment: Spanish Track ~ Lay Leader Training"). Course fee: $50 residents in tri-presbytery (Greater Atlanta, Cherokee, Northeast Georgia). Or, $100 residents outside tri-presbytery. Or, $75 each additional person from same presbytery, outside tri-presbytery. Textbooks are the student’s responsibility. Deadline to register: July 19.

Jubilee! Luke

The Gospel of Luke contains stories that show the mission of Jesus to be the revelation of the beginning of the Messianic Age – a celebration of God’s jubilee for all people. In this course, authored by Dale Lindsay Morgan, we will examine the idea of jubilee, and the response Jesus received in his ministry. With instructor Rebecca Parker, begin to consider our own responses to Jesus and the call to be witnesses to the gospel in our own churches, in our communities, and in the world. Explore the texts, make personal connections with the themes, and receive practical ideas for teaching this series.
Designed for women who will be teaching this series, this workshop is open to anyone interested in this topic.

Immersion Experience Weekend: An Invitation to a Deeper Spiritual Life
This course will explore the origins of the Christian Spiritual Tradition. Participants will study the formative elements of Biblical Spirituality, Monastic Spirituality, and Reformed Spirituality. Participants will also have the opportunity for personal reflection through guided meditative journaling, exploring their own unique journey with the living God. Community and practical application of acquired knowledge are also part of this experience. This course is the starting place for the Certificate in Spiritual Formation. Occasional students are welcome.
