  Supporting the Seminary

Serving an integrative function in the Master of Divinity and Doctor of Ministry degree programs, Supervised Ministry helps students explore relationships between theology and life experience, between private convictions and public actions. Its goal is pastoral integrity.

To achieve this goal students undertake specific acts of ministry through internships or practicums supervised by an experienced practitioner. Supervisors and students engage in theological and pastoral reflections about their practices of ministry.

All supervised ministry courses emphasize five core elements:

  • Experience in Ministry: Any Supervised Ministry experience must take seriously both the learning needs of students and the ministry needs of the ministry context.
  • Learning Covenant: Students and supervisors negotiate a written learning covenant to identify learning goals, pastoral activities, and plans for supervision.
  • Pastoral Supervision: Students and supervisors are required to engage routinely in theological and pastoral reflection about the student’s work. In most contexts a team of laypersons or peers also participates in the reflection process.
  • Evaluation: The supervisor prepares written assessments of the student’s ministry.
  • Academic Requirements: Students are required to write self-assessments and/or other assigned materials.

Resources for Supervised Ministry

Students and congregations interested in learning more about our Supervised Ministry program may find the following resources helpful.

Master of Divinity Degree

1. Becoming a Teaching Congregation: Congregations interested in hosting an M.Div. student for a summer or year-long internship should consult this document for guidelines to becoming a teaching congregation.

2. Church Information Form (CIF): Congregations use the CIF to apply to participate as a Teaching Congregation. Once a congregation is approved, the CIF becomes a public document which introduces student intern candidates to the position during the placement process. The CIF can be completed online, then submitted electronically to the Supervised Ministry office.

Note: To complete the CIF online, you need version 7.0 or higher of Adobe Acrobat Reader. You may use the link below to download this free application.

3. Code of Ethics for Supervised Ministry: Prior to the beginning of any internship, the supervisor and intern both agree to abide by this faculty-approvedcode of ethics.

4. Administrative Covenant: Once a student and congregation are approved to serve together, the Administrative Covenant is used to define responsibilities, compensation, lines of authority and other administrative agreements.

5. Learning Covenant: Developed in the first two weeks of the internship, the Learning Covenant is used to clarify the intern’s learning goals and pastoral activities, as well as a plan for supervision.

6. Evaluation of Supervised Ministry: At the completion of an internship, the Supervising Pastor completes and submits this assessment of the intern’s work in the Teaching Congregation.

1. Guidelines for the D.Min. Practicum: Detailed outline of policies, structures, and requirements for the D.Min. practicum. The student and practicum supervisor should consult these guidelines throughout the practicum.
