Presbyterian Women's 2012 Bible Study

by Lifelong Learning Staff

2012 Horizons Bible Study, illustrated by Laura James

Every year Presbyterian Women gather at Columbia Theological Seminary for a training event especially designed for women who will be teaching the new PW Horizon’s Bible Study in their churches. This year’s study, Dispatches to God’s Household: The General Epistles, focuses on community.

The six books of the New Testament explored in this study—1 and 2 Peter, 1–3 John, and Jude—teach us what it means to live in community, what it means to belong to the household of God. Together with Nancy Benson-Nicol, we will explore family as a guiding and powerful metaphor in these epistles, and will come to grips with what this metaphor means in the world of the Roman Empire as contrasted with the more expansive idea of being a member of God’s household through the Holy Spirit. These letters were meant to inspire and comfort the faithful in first-century Asia Minor, and they continue to speak to us today as we grapple with how to live in community as disciples of Christ.

Designed for women who will be teaching this study, this bible study is open to anyone interested in this topic.

August 6-8, 2012 author Rev. Nancy Benson-Nicol will lead the weekday course.  Rev. Sharol Hayner will lead the weekend course August 10-11, 2012.
