Why Spiritual Formation?

“My soul thirsts for God, the living God. When shall I come and behold the face of God?” Psalm 42:2

In this article Catherine Read, one of the Spiritual Formation program’s newest participants, shares with Deedra Rich, program director, about her spiritual journey and desire for a deeper relationship with God.

CR: I long for uninterrupted communion with God, in spite of living in a culture filled with endless noise, distractions, busy-ness, and obsession with self and productivity. For me, faith is defined by loving relationships – with God, self, and others – all of which presently fall very short of what our Creator God intended. I yearn for something more, something beyond. Yet through Christ we are already redeemed. Through God, Christ, and the power of the Holy Spirit, we are sustained.

DR: How are you responding to God’s call to deepen your personal spiritual journey?

CR: Spiritual Formation/Transformation is a lifelong process. Engaging in spiritual disciplines/practices, learning from the saints who have gone before us, and fellowship opportunities with like-minded believers (particularly Reformed) have helped me on my personal spiritual journey. I know that I still have a long way to go, but I am eager to learn. I believe the Spirituality Program at Columbia will guide me in this process.

DR: Why commit to several years with Columbia’s Certificate in Spiritual Formation?

CR: This CTS Spiritual Formation course sequence is sure to help me develop greater intimacy in my relationship with God, which will in turn allow me to better discern God’s nudges with regard to how I can participate more fully in His kingdom work here and now.

DR: What are your long-term hopes for participating in the Spirituality Program?

CR: I hope that by the end of this experience with CTS, I will be more knowledgeable and more confident in my ability to provide meaningful growth opportunities for fellow disciples as, together, we seek to become increasingly mature and faithful Christians.
