Weekend Eastern Orthodox Seminar in April at Montreat

by Lifelong Learnng Staff

Bruce Rigdon

Learn the rich liturgical and theological traditions of Eastern Orthodox Christianity during a four-day seminar, April 28 – May 1, at Montreat Conference Center in North Carolina, with distinguished scholar and church historian V. Bruce Rigdon.

“The roots of Eastern Orthodox churches extend back to the eastern Roman Empire and the very beginnings of Christian history,” says Deedra Rich, Associate Director of Spirituality. “Unlike our western Latin culture and history, these churches were influenced by the Greek language and culture and the Byzantine civilization. What developed was a spirituality of enormous beauty, vitality, and strength.”

“Monasticism, for example, was born among these Christian communities – with its spiritual wisdom, disciplines of prayer and meditation, and practices of spiritual direction.”

Some aspects of Eastern Orthodoxy to be covered in this course:

°      experiencing the Jesus prayer;

°      looking at the way Easter is celebrated;

°      learning to “read” icons;

°      singing Orthodox prayers;

°      comparing theological themes, and

°      looking at the ways that biblical stories are interpreted.
