S3 Project

The S3 Project, a joint endeavor of Columbia’s Lifelong Learning programs in continuing education and spirituality, focused on sustaining pastoral excellence. The project accepted its final cohort groups in April 2007 and will conclude in December 2008.

S3, named for the three components identified as being key to effective ministry—Sabbath, study, and service, was funded by a $1.3 million grant from the Lilly Endowment.

The S3 project, under the direction of Dent Davis, Columbia’s dean and vice president for lifelong learning, brought together over a five-year period 43 peer learning groups involving nearly 300 pastors. The groups were selected on the basis of their proposals for a two-year learning project, which was then partially supported by S3.

Columbia’s Center for Lifelong Learning is applying for funds to continue a version of the S3 Project. Please check back for new information in early 2009.
