“Exploring the Missional Church” Is Topic of Thompson Scholars Event, May 19-23, 2008

2007-12-30

Decatur, GA—Applications are being accepted for “Exploring the Missional Church” a Lifelong Learning event to be held May 19-23, 2008 at Columbia Theological Seminary. Steve and Sharol Hayner will lead this event, which features small-group discussions, family-style meals, and visits to other ministry settings. Steve is Peachtree Associate Professor of Evangelism and Church Growth at CTS. Sharol, a 2007 graduate of the seminary, is the associate pastor for discipleship at Peachtree Presbyterian Church in Atlanta In the words of a prominent missional church blogger, “Jesus told us to go into all the world and be his ambassadors, but many churches today have inadvertently changed the ‘go and be’ command to a ‘come and see’ appeal.” The 2008 Thompson Scholars will explore what being a “go and be” or “missional” church is about. Is it merely another church fad? Or is the Holy Spirit calling us to a new way of living our lives together? Participants will be selected after submitting an application via e-mail to Sarah Erickson (ericksons@ctsnet.edu). Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis and accepted until the course is full, or up to April 1. All applications are to be made via e-mail and must include the following information: name of applicant, church name and mailing address, phone number, e-mail address, and a brief answer to two questions: 1) How would you describe the missional church? 2) Why would you like to participate in this event? Those selected will be notified as applications are reviewed and not later than April 15. Additional course information including pre-course reading will be distributed upon acceptance. The program fee, which includes housing (four nights, double occupancy) at the Holiday Inn Conference Center and all meals except breakfast, is $150. (Single rooms are available for an additional $290 for the four nights.) The reduced program fee is made possible through the financial support of gifts in honor of Dr. Cecil Thompson, dedicated to the support of the work of evangelism in the church. Columbia Theological Seminary, located in Decatur, Georgia, was established in 1828 and is one of 10 theological institutions of the Presbyterian Church (USA).
