New book on the creation story argues for a new way of reading the Bible
Decatur, GA. William P. Brown, professor of Old Testament at Columbia Theological Seminary, is the author of The Seven Pillars of Creation: The Bible, Science, and the Ecology of Wonder, released this week by Oxford University Press.
In this provocative new work, Dr. Brown identifies no fewer than seven different biblical perspectives on creation. By examining these perspectives, he illuminates the connections and conflicts between the biblical creation traditions and the natural sciences, arguing for a new way of reading the Bible in the light of science and ecology. In Dr. Brown's argument, both scientific inquiry and theological reflection are driven by a sense of wonder, which, in his words, "unites the scientist and the psalmist.”
Columbia Theological Seminary, located in Decatur, Georgia, was established in 1828 and is one of 10 theological institutions of the Presbyterian Church (USA).
