Columbia Theological Seminary spirituality courses offer Eastertide renewal at retreat locations

2011-04-05

IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Decatur, GA.  Columbia Theological Seminary’s program in Christian spirituality will offer two courses immediately after Easter. A course on Eastern Orthodox spirituality is April 28 – May 1, at Montreat Conference Center, in North Carolina. The annual women’s contemplative retreat is May 9 -12 at the Monastery of the Sacred Heart in Cullman, AL. Both courses earn credit toward completion of the Certificate in Spiritual Formation. Non-certificate participants are welcome. Discounted fees are offered for graduates of the certificate program. For more information, contact Deedra Rich, 404.687.4557 or richd@ctsnet.edu.

Leading the Eastern Orthodox spirituality course is Bruce Rigdon, a distinguished scholar and church historian who is regarded as one of the foremost authorities on the Russian Orthodox church. Describing the course, Dr. Rigdon says, “From experiencing the Jesus prayer to looking at the way Easter is celebrated, from learning to read icons to singing Orthodox prayers, from comparing theological themes to looking at the ways that biblical stories are interpreted - in all these ways, we will seek to see the life of our Orthodox friends and in the light of what we discover to look again at our own traditions.” Register Here

This year’s contemplative retreat for women, “Abide in Me as I in You,” will be led by Lalor Cadley and Benedictine Sister Kathleen Gallas, who has lived at Sacred Heart for more than 50 years. Ms. Cadley is the founder and director of Chrysalis Center, an organization offering spiritual direction, discernment circles, book studies and retreats. She says, “We live in a culture of mass distraction, where it is difficult to find regular periods of stillness in which we can listen deeply to the voice of God within. Participants will be able to experience extended periods of silence and join the sisters in communal prayer. The program also includes brief presentations on the spiritual life and optional conversations on the challenge of living a contemplative life in the world.” Register Here
