Building Bridges: From the Past Into the Future – The Talk Around Tables

Columbia Theological Seminary will join St. James’ and Zion Baptist Church in Marietta for a community symposium on February 23, 9:00 to 1:00 at Zion’s Fellowship Hall. It will feature both black and white historians speaking to increase understanding and encourage dialogue among the participants, who will then meet around tables for discussion. The event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be provided.

Speakers are Dr. Deborah Flemister Mullen, Dean of Faculty and Executive Vice President, Columbia Theological Seminary, Associate Professor of American Christianity and Black Church Studies and Prof. Erskine Clarke PhD, Professor Emeritus, Columbia Theological Seminary. Prof. Clarke is the author of the Bancroft award-winning book Dwelling Place: A Plantation Epic, “A history of two peoples living together on the Georgia coast from 1805 to 1869.” Their topic will be “Competing Memories: Slavery and its Legacies."

The Pathfinders at St. James’ is spearheading this effort for St. James’, whose mission is “to follow Christ’s commandment to ‘love your neighbor as yourself’ and thus heal the breach caused by slavery and subsequent racial discrimination." Theologian Howard Thurman reminds us of the importance of true fellowship. Hate can grow, he says, where there is no contact or only superficial contact. On the other hand, love flourishes in true fellowship where there is dialogue fostering empathy and understanding. Are you seeking that fellowship? Do you have ideas to share?
