Educating imaginative, resilient leaders for God's changing world.

Feasting on the Gospels, Vol. 1 Released

In 2008-2011, Westminster John Knox Press and the Seminary jointly produced Feasting on the Word. David Bartlett and Barbara Brown Taylor were the co-general editors. Chuck Campbell, George Stroup, Kathleen OConnor, Carlos Cardoza-Orlandi, Marcia Riggs, and Beth Johnson were six of the twelve editors. Joan Murchison was the Project Manager and Mary Lynn Darden was the Compiler. Most of the Faculty wrote articles for that series. Other Feasting projects supported by Columbia Seminary were the book of children's sermons by David and Carol Bartlett and the worship companion edited by Kim Long.

Feasting on the Word is a lectionary resource for preachers. For every Sunday in the three-year lectionary cycle and every special occasion for which the lectionary appoints texts, there are sixteen thousand-word essays--one on each of the four texts (Old Testament, Psalm, Gospel, and Epistle) from an exegetical perspective, a theological perspective, a pastoral perspective, and a homiletical perspective.

The most recent spinoff is Feasting on the Gospels, again a joint project of Columbia Seminary and the Press. Cynthia A. Jarvis, minister of the Chestnut Hill Church in Philadelphia, and Beth Johnson are the co-general editors. Four of our twelve editors are CTS faculty: Stan Saunders, Martha Moore-Keish, Mark Douglas, and Cam Murchison. Joan Murchison and Mary Lynn Darden are reprising their roles as Project Manager and Compiler. Again, virtually the entire faculty has contributed essays.

Feasting on the Gospels is structured the same as Feasting on the Word with two important differences: comments on all four Gospels are continuous rather than only the passages appointed by the lectionary, and the audience is not only preachers but also educators, Bible study leaders, and interested Christians.

Congratulations to our Faculty and Staff on a job well done! The first volume is already available in the Bookstore, or for more information, visit:
