“Religion
in Appalachia” Lecture Series in Montreat, NC, July 21-25
Decatur,
GA— Columbia
Theological Seminary will offer a series of five lectures, “Religion in
Appalachia,” July 21-25, at the Montreat Conference Center, Montreat, NC. The
lectures will be presented from 2:30-3:30 p.m. each day, with special evening
programs on Tuesday and Wednesday at 7:00. Admission is free and open to the
public.
Distinguished presenters include
Charles Lippy, president-elect, American
Society of Church History, speaking on holiness and the Holy Spirit in central
Appalachia; Freeman Owle, Cherokee elder, storyteller, and stone
carver; Denise Giardina, a novelist
who writes about the struggles of Appalachian coal miners; shape-note singer
and teacher Jane Spencer; William Turner, National
Endowment for the Humanities Chair, Berea College, speaking on religion and
spirituality among black Appalachians; and John Kuykendall, president emeritus, Davidson College,
on the role of Presbyterians in higher education in the region.

The Montreat lecture series is part of Columbia’s
program in Presbyterian and Reformed History and Theology and is offered
through the seminary’s Center for Lifelong Learning. The 2008 series is sponsored by Columbia
and the Montreat Conference Center in cooperation with the Montreat Adult
Summer Club and the Presbyterian Heritage Center at Montreat.
