Rodger Nishioka, associate professor of Christian education, taught two workshops for Palisades Presbytery on young adult ministry; preached at the Presbyterian Church in Tenafly, NJ; was a keynote speaker for a weekend young adult retreat for the Pittsburgh presbytery; a keynote speaker for the high school youth celebration at Mo Ranch Presbyterian Conference Center in Hunt, TX; spoke at the Association of Presbyterian Church Educators luncheon at the General Assembly meeting in Birmingham, AL; was a keynote speaker for the Presbyterian Church in Canada’s national youth event in St. Catherine’s, ON; and preached at the Village Presbyterian Church in Prairie Village, KS
Rhonda Payne Weary (MATS ’04), staff associate for contextual education, has been selected to serve as a 2006-07 Black Women in Ministerial Leadership Fellow. This inaugural group of 15 fellows was selected by the Department of Black Women in Church and Society, at the Interdenominational Theological Center. The group will focus their energies on individually designed community projects and on leadership skills, particularly those addressing the challenges encountered by black women in ministry. The 10-month program is endorsed by the Lilly Foundation and will provide support for Rhonda’s longtime vision—to prepare intercollegiate young adults for Christ-centered theater ministry. This drama-ethics team will perform at a series of seminars designed to address critical issues in the community
Laura Mendenhall, president, preached at First Presbyterian, Columbus, GA; spoke at the Company of New Pastors Luncheon at the General Assembly in Birmingham, AL; attended the biennial meeting of the Association of Theological Schools in Chicago, IL; spoke at the Presbyterian Women’s Triennium Gathering in Louisville, KY; and preached and spoke at the Chautauqua Institution in New York
David Bartlett, professor of New Testament, preached the installation sermon for Wesley Avram at Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church on June 11; taught a course on expository preaching with Robert Wilson at Yale Divinity School in mid June; and wrote the “Matthew” portion of The Fourfold Gospel, edited by Andrew Gregory and published in August by SPCK and by Fortress Press
Carlos Cardoza-Orlandi, associate professor of world Christianity, wrote the lecture “Prevailing and emerging theologies of mission: consensus and variances”, which was delivered by one of Columbia’s international students, Claudia Aguilar at the “The Future of Mission” conference at the Lutheran Theological Seminary in Philadelphia, PA. The lecture will be published in a book that carries the title of the conference. At Trinity Presbyterian Church, Atlanta, GA, he taught a course titled “An Unfinished Journey: Mission Theologies in the 20th Century.” He also taught a Summer Sunday session, “Jesus, a Proto Ancestor: African and Latin American Christologies,” at Central Presbyterian Church, Atlanta, GA; was a keynote speaker at the New Church Development National Conference of the PCUSA, delivered a workshop, and preached in the worship service. The lecture title was “Mission in a New Rhythm”and the workshop title was “Geography of Grace: The Serial Movement of the Christian Religion”; preached at the 90th anniversary of the Iglesia Cristiana (Discipulos de Cristo) in Sonadora, Puerto Rico; co-edited the Portuguese edition of The Dictionary of Theologians, titled, Diccionario Ilustrado Dos Intérpretes da fé (Justo L. Gonzalez, general editor); had his article “Vodou, Santería, and Spiritism” published in the Encyclopedia of Women and Religion in North America

William Brown, professor of Old Testament, was a resource theologian and syllabus planner for the national pastor-theologian program sponsored by the Center of Theological Inquiry; was a facilitator for a pre-tenure workshop sponsored by the Wabash Center for Teaching and Learning Theology and Religion for faculty members beginning their theological teaching in seminaries across the country
Sarah Erickson '03, associate director of Lifelong Learning, participated in Montreat Youth III as a leader with the youth of North Decatur Presbyterian Church, Atlanta, GA; attended the fourth annual Lilly SPE gathering in Indianapolis, IN
Marcia Riggs, the J. Erskine Love Professor of Christian Ethics, received a Distinguished Alumnae Award at Randolph-Macon Woman’s College; had an essay titled “The Globalization of Nothing and Creatio Ex Nihilo” published in Theology That Matters: Ecology, Economy, and God released by Fortress Press
Steve Hayner, Peachtree Associate Professor of Evangelism and Church Growth, taught “Good News at the Margins: Exploring Emergent Church Culture” for the CTS Thompson Scholars; taught “The Missional Church” and “Mission and the General Assembly” for the Latitude & Longitude Class at Peachtree Presbyterian Church, Atlanta, GA; preached at the installation of April Love-Fordham as pastor of Calvary Presbyterian Church, Marietta, GA; chaired the meeting of the board of the International Justice Mission in Washington, DC; was commissioner and participant at the ordination of Troy Bronsink, Atlanta, GA; is a board member of NavPress Advisory Board; preached a sermon titled “Deep Breathing” at Clairmont Presbyterian Church, Atlanta, GA; and was a plenary speaker (“The Missional Church”) and workshop leader (“Evangelism Made a Little Less Difficult”) at the Presbyterian Global Fellowship Conference.
