Interested in taking a course that is part of a degree program, but do not wish to work toward a degree? Enroll as an Special Student and take courses for credit! The Dean of the Faculty must approve the program of study and every course proposed to take. Special Student status must be renewed each academic term. All applicants for whom English is a second language must pass the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) before admission and enrollment for credit can be attained. TOEFL score of 84 or higher on the internet-based TOEFL (iBT, iBT Home Edition, or Paper-delivered) with a minimum score of 21 in each of the skill sections.


Students of other institutions of theological education who want to take courses for credit at Columbia can enroll as an Occasional Student. Their application must include either a letter of good standing from the Registrar or an official transcript of work completed at their home institution. It is the responsibility of the student to determine the transferability of Columbia’s credit to his or her home institution.
