Travel with Purpose
Thoughtful, purposeful journeys can stir questions, lead to insight, raise anxiety, and give new energy and perspectives. Some journeys bring us closer to God and to other people. At Columbia Theological Seminary, occasional opportunities to travel with others for the purpose of exploring the world through the lens of our Christian faith are offered through Academic Affairs (basic or advanced degree courses), the Center for Lifelong Learning (non-degree learning) and through Alumni Relations (for alumni and friends of the seminary).
Travel opportunities through the Center for Lifelong Learning have included contemplative retreats at monasteries in Georgia and Alabama, an eco-kayaking trip in the Bahamas, pilgrimages to Iona in Scotland and the Holy Land, a seminar in Greece, and Presbyterian Heritage tours to Coastal Georgia and South Carolina, and Central Europe.
Pilgrimage to the Holy Land (Certificate in Spiritual Formation)
Pilgrimage is one of the oldest and most important spiritual disciplines. The capstone of the Certificate in Spiritual Formation program is a pilgrimage to the Holy Land. The most recent pilgrimage took place March 5-20, 2014. Please read a reflection by one of the pilgrims published in our Journeying Together e-newsletter found HERE.
This journey consists of 7 days in Galilee and 7 days in Jerusalem. The pilgrimage is designed for spiritual formation and renewal. Excursions are scheduled each morning, leaving afternoons free for small groups, rest, journaling and worship. Participants receive a pre-pilgrimage reading list, and participate in an orientation prior to departure; written reflection papers are submitted upon return. Pilgrims who undertake the pilgrimage in order to complete requirements for the Certificate in Spiritual Formation must complete all other certificate work 3 months prior to the departure date. Academy Travel in Decatur coordinates all travel arrangements. Information for the next pilgrimage will be posted when available
