April 13, 2017—What brought you here?
“One of the great spiritual longings of modern times is the longing for ‘depth.’ Some might call this a search for meaning or a desire for connection. But I think the longing for depth is the longing for God,’ says Debra Weir, Associate Director, Spirituality and Lifelong Learning at Columbia Theological Seminary. “It is a desire that wells up from deep within us and emerges in those rare moments when we are captured by moment of awe, or sudden knowing.”
Spiritual Direction, often called spiritual companioning or spiritual friendship, is an intentional relationship between a person seeking spiritual guidance and a trained individual (the spiritual director). The Certificate in Spiritual Direction is a 2 1/2 year training program for those seeking to discern and develop their gifts and skills as spiritual directors.
Recently, we spoke with current participants in the Certificate in Spiritual Direction program asking them, “What brought you here?” We share some of their answers below. Do you hear yourself in their responses?
