B6209 Reading the Old Testament in a Global Context

This course offers an overview of contemporary approaches to reading the Old Testament, which critically engage with gender, race, class, and sexual orientation in both selected biblical texts and our contemporary contexts. Students will explore the nature and significance of feminist, womanist, postcolonial, and queer biblical interpretation, growing in an understanding of the importance of context for reading the biblical text. Specific attention will be given to how these approaches have found expression in the (South) African context, which may help us consider the implications of these reading strategies for our respective ecclesial and societal communities.
