Dr. Rafael Reyes III Named Inaugural Senior Advisor for Flourishing and Belonging

Columbia Theological Seminary is excited to announce the appointment of Dr. Rafael Reyes III as the Seminary’s inaugural Senior Advisor for Flourishing in Belonging, effective January 6, 2025.

Dr. Reyes, a seasoned scholar and administrator, brings a wealth of experience in theological education and community engagement. His career is marked by a commitment to fostering intellectual curiosity, promoting diversity and inclusion, and empowering students to become successful leaders. Most recently, he served as the Graduate Director for Student Life and Community Engagement at Yeshiva University’s Katz School of Science and Health.

“In a rapidly changing society, with the development of culturally diverse communities of faith, ministry formation for decades to come will require increased capacity to engage people of varying cultures with openness and adaptability,” said the Rev. Dr. Victor Aloyo Jr., President of Columbia Theological Seminary. “To address this need, and in alignment with our commitment to justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion, we have created the position of Senior Advisor for Flourishing and Belonging. Dr. Reyes’ expertise will be invaluable in guiding our community toward a more inclusive and equitable future.”

Dr. Reyes has held teaching positions at several institutions, including New York Theological Seminary, the University of San Diego, and New Theological Seminary of the West. He has also served as Adjunct Faculty at Marist College. His academic background includes a PhD in Religion from Claremont School of Theology and master’s degrees from Claremont, Drew University, New York Theological Seminary, and Alliance Theological Seminary.

“Columbia, and this position, sparked my interest because of the opportunity to share/live into pastoral leadership as we faithfully explore spaces that include faith, gender, race, ethnicity, and denomination,” Reyes said. ““How are we and how can we be truly ecumenical and provide a safe place for all to flourish and learn?””

Dr. Reyes will play a crucial role in advancing Columbia’s mission to welcome national and global stories of resilience across the campus. His leadership will help to foster a thriving community where all members feel valued, respected, and empowered.
