B611 Images of Violence in the Old Testament and Ancient World

Considers the various ways in which violence figures in Old Testament texts and images of the ancient Near East. Special attention is given to interpreting biblical poetry (e.g., Lamentations), and analyzing select images from ancient/modern contexts. Explores the problem of violence for theological interpretation of Scripture, as well as the ethical questions evoked by imaged suffering in contemporary image-saturated media.
