The Doctor of Educational Ministry

The Doctor of Educational Ministry (DEdMin) is designed for community leaders and educators across diverse settings—including religious and interreligious organizations, chaplaincy, nonprofits, congregations, schools, and other community facing  organizations.

The program highlights decolonial and anti-colonial approaches to education that address the whole person, communities, and their formation. Students learn in a cohort model where they act as co-educators, both teaching and learning from one another. Together, they develop advanced, context-specific integration of educational frameworks, methodologies, and practices that offer new liberative models for teaching and learning.

Through collaborative work, students explore and advance innovative educational approaches that support flourishing ministries and communities of care.

DEdMin Curriculum Highlights

• COHORT MODEL: Each DEdMin cohort brings together people from diverse backgrounds, traditions, and experiences. Students move through the core courses together as co-learners and co-teachers.

• CORE COURSES: Cohorts take classes together, and they include an Introduction Seminar, Advanced Study in Faith and Human Development, Advanced Study in Teaching, Learning, and Curriculum, and Educational Care Resources. Beyond these courses, students take electives across various disciplines.

• HYBRID FORMAT: Our courses are primarily offered as one to two-week intensive courses on campus with pre-and post-work online. Several are offered fully online.

• INDEPENDENT RESEARCH: Students work alongside a faculty mentor to develop their skills and abilities in theological research as they explore a research question within their own context.

DEdMin Admission Requirements

To apply for the DEdMin, prospective students must have the following:

• Possession of an ATS-approved first professional degree in educational ministry (i.e., MRE, MACE or MAPT with a concentration in Christian education, or MDiv with demonstrated coursework in educational ministry). Ministerial experience is not considered an alternative or substitute for the professional master’s degree in educational ministry, nor are other master’s degrees in education that do not have comprehensive exposure to theological disciplines. Applicants with appropriate coursework may be eligible for advanced standing.

• Demonstrate the ability to engage in the practices of educational ministry, superior academic aptitude, and capacity both to contribute to the program and benefit by participation in it. Applicants typically hold an official position in educational ministry throughout the duration of their enrollment in the degree program.

• Ordinarily, three years of experience in educational ministry after completion of the first professional degree.
