The Master of Theology

The Master of Theology (ThM) enables students who have already earned an MDiv or its equivalent to advance their knowledge in a particular theological discipline in preparation for an academic vocation or professional ministry. A distinctive element of Columbia’s ThM program is the opportunity to work closely with faculty mentors. Half of the required credits are oriented toward the production of an individual thesis project with a faculty advisor who has expertise in that area of study.

Flexible Format

ThM students can pursue their degree in one of two formats: as a one-year, full-time residential program OR a two-year, part-time online (with one week on campus in mid-August).

ThM Admission Requirements

To be considered for admission, prospective students are required to:

• Have completed the MDiv degree, or its academic equivalent, at an accredited seminary or divinity school. A Master of Arts or a Master of Theological Studies degree in the appropriate area may be accepted as a substitute, but additional preparatory work may be required.
• Students working in biblical studies (i.e., Old or New Testament) should be comfortable working in the language pertinent to that degree: Hebrew for Old Testament and Greek for New Testament.
