P5160 The Beloved Community: An Introduction to Public Ministry

This course examines public ministry through the concept of the beloved community, a  society that has been transformed by love, peace, and justice. What social and emotional constructs are barriers to building the beloved community? What are the inward and outward challenges of public ministry?  What spiritual resources are needed for sustained public ministry?  A liberative theo-ethical framework will be pursued while engaging in critical examination of the public ministry of black liberation leaders, inclusive of Howard Thurman, Martin Luther King Jr., Malcom X, and Ella Baker. Various strategies of social analysis, ecclesial self-examination, and social transformation will be introduced with the goal of students’ envisioning their own formation and strategies of public ministry.
