In one of his sermons, Eckhart claims that we must “take leave of God for the sake of God.” What he meant by this points to the radical nature of his insistence that faith is not “thinking about” God or formulating an idea of God; this idea is what we must abandon to find the “God beyond God.” We come to know this through the deep of experience of radical, non-dualistic oneness of being.
Our exploration will begin with excerpts from Eckart’s own paradoxical writings, and then turn to poems from three books written by Mark S. Burrows and Jon Sweeney.
Join Mark S. Burrows for an adventurous four-week journey into the mystical vision of Meister Eckhart. We’ll probe this remarkable theologian’s grasp of the spiritual life, which invites us to discover radiance in the midst of darkness, passion at the heart of silence, and paradox beyond simplistic banalities. As the poet Elliot once put it, this work is only advised for those willing to “risk enchantment.”
