This course introduces students to the major themes and questions in Augustine studies. It examines who Augustine was historically, philosophically, theologically, and pastorally. By a critical engagement with his thought in historical context, the seminar also engages with the roots of our own conflicted identities. We will read three classic works of Augustine in full: Tractates on First John, On Christian Doctrine, and Confessions, as well as excerpts from sermons, letters, and City of God. Two main secondary sources are: Serge Lancel’s biography of Augustine and Carol Harrison’s Augustine: Christian Truth and Fractured Humanity. The students will find that Augustine is not only an historical conversation partner but also a tutor who helps train the mind (spirit and heart!) in a way of thinking and contemplating.
