I840 Sexuality, Marriage, and the 21st Century Church

Americans are asking questions around the nature of sexuality, debating who has the right to marry, and wondering what the church has to do with it all. Students in this course will seek to articulate a biblical theology of relationship that considers sexual, marital, familial, ecclesial and communal ties while taking seriously the lives and experiences of 21st century Americans. Special attention will be given to marriage: the history of marriage in the church, the power of the wedding industry, the pastor’s legal and ecclesial roles, contemporary expectations of marriage, and wedding liturgies.
