H636 Doctrine of Election

H636 Doctrine of Election

At one time election or predestination was one of the most controversial doctrines in Christian faith. It was vigorously attacked and defended, although what “it” was continued to be a matter of considerable disagreement. Today people are more likely to be curious than they are advocates or attackers. What is election? Why have some theologians argued that it is indispensable in a Christian understanding of the God of the Bible? What are its practical implications for the church and its ministry? This seminar will examine what Augustine, Calvin, Schleiermacher, and Barth have said about election. Requirements: seminar presentation and a term paper.
